Their Plan
The Emptying Nesters
- Jennifer and Michael have been married for 20 years.
- Each has a child from a prior relationship: Jennifer has Jacob (26), and Michael has Emma (23). Together, they have one child, Abigail (18).
- Jacob is married and has two children. Emma had to declare bankruptcy, but she is recovering financially. Abigail is graduating high school this year.
- Jennifer and Michael are worried about how to care for each other in retirement, how to divide their estate fairly for the three children, and how to protect that inheritance from poor choices and misfortune.
Their Plan
The Golden Years
- David and Lisa have been married for a little over 30 years and have just retired.
- Their children, Ashley (28) and Emily (25), are grown, married, and raising families of their own.
- David and Lisa have made good investments and saved well for their retirement, though they are concerned about taxes. Each has a respectable traditional IRA.
- Outside of their retirement accounts, David preferred investing in real estate (especially rental properties), and Lisa favored the stock market.
- They’re worried about the income taxes their children will have to pay under the SECURE Act if they inherit the IRAs. Each also is uninterested in the other’s investment style.

Aging with Dignity
- Mary and Robert were childhood sweethearts. They’ve been married for over 50 years.
- They have a son, Michael (48), and two granddaughters, Emma (23) and Abigail (18). Michael’s stepson, Jacob (26), isn’t a blood relation, but they love him as their own.
- Mary and Robert can tell that they’re aging and want to do so with dignity.
- They want to stay in their home as long as they can, and they don’t want to lose everything to the nursing home if they can’t stay where they’ve lived their entire lives.
- They want a good advocate to talk to medical professionals and someone to help protect them from predators who might try to scam the elderly.
Their Plan
Love is Forever
- Linda and Steven are about to retire.
- They have two children, Jennifer (44) and Ryan (42); two grandchildren, Jacob (26) and Abigail (18); and two great-grandchildren, Liam and Olivia.
- Ryan, who has special needs, lives with them.
- Linda and Steven do not expect Ryan will marry or have children and are aware that his care will likely fall on Jennifer after they are gone.
- Their number one concern is making sure Ryan has as vibrant and complete a life as they can provide if he out lives them. Ryan cannot live on his own without support, but with that supplemental care that his parents are currently giving him, he is enjoying building a life for himself.

Her Legacy
- Barbara has lived a great life. She’s 89 years young.
- She has a son, David (66), and daughter, Susan (64); grandchildren Ashley (28), Emily (25), and Christopher (27); and several great-grandchildren. She divorced David’s father, John, decades ago, and hasn’t looked back.
- Her family all think of her as a sweet, old lady, but she has lived a life that would make them stand agog if they ever knew.
- She wants all of her affairs in order for when she ultimately has to go, but she’s not dwelling on the end of her days. She’s too busy making the most of life. You only get one, and she wants her money’s worth.
- She does see a kindred spirit in her great-granddaughter, Olivia, and she wants to kindle the fire behind that girl’s eyes by showing her how her generation broke barriers and seized the day.
